Reviewing the history of Hollywood...? One perhaps can begin on a particular spot that was the heartbeat of Hollywood during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.This heartbeat was the Luau Restaurant and Entertainment. The Luau opened on 14h00 up until 2h00 next morning and was, as already indicated, the heartbeat of Hollywood.
Luau was owned by Stephen Crane. Stephen was once married to the famous Hollywood goddess Lana Turner. Both Stephen Crane and Lana Turner had a daughter Cheryl Crane. Cheryl Crane’s life was shattered at the age of 14 when he killed Johnny Stompanato with a kitchen knife long after her parents were divorced. Stompanato was Lana Turner’s boyfriend, and apparently Lana Turner wanted to ditch him like she did to a number of her previous lovers. But Stompanato could not accept that, he reportedly exploding: “YOU WILL DO AS I SAY! You think you can order men around? From now on I’ll do the ordering! When I say hop, you will hop! When I say jump you will jump!” He grabbed her arms roughly and shook her: Baby, you’ll do what I tell you, you will never get rid of me, I am sticking around!”
Armed with the knife she approached her mother’s bedroom. And this is how she narrate what followed:
“The door flew open. Mother stood there, her hand on the door knob. He [Stompanato] was coming at mother from behind, his arm raised to strike. I took a step forward and lifted the weapon. He ran on the blade. It went in. In! For three ghastly heartbeats, our body fused. He looked straight at me, unblinking. “My God, Cheryl, what have you done”? In slow motion he pulled off and jerked in backward steps toward the bed, every second his unbelieving eyes fixed on mine. But why, his eyes seem to ask me. Then they fluttered toward the ceiling, and when he looked back at me his face hardened. He knew that his life was ending, and he had not seen it coming”.
In our next article we shall consider the Luau in detail - the life it gave to Hollywood.

Top-level comments on this article: (3 total)Thank you Chris for a bit of Hollywood history that I had forgotten about. I was 15 at the time and I was interested in anything Hollywood and especially anything that made the news featuring a teen. Nice job Chris, Michael.
I am fascinated with Hollywood and her history. Your tale was detailed and vivid. Looking forward to your next articles and insights. People say that Hollywood is just a corrupt place. I think that it is a mirror that reflects back many of the conditions we have in America. Thanks so much for your article.
Well told Chris, thank you for sharing this bit of history. Blessings!
