So here we are in the course of the beginning of an era that is post 201o! And we see our view of Japan shifting from confidence and stability to anxious uncertainty in split moments. And beyond this Japan’s view of the world is bound to change if not radically but in a subtle fashion. The religion or philosophy that is dominant in Japan is Confucianism.Confucianism is merely an offshoot of stoicism. For the stoics the basis of morality is conformity with nature – not only one’s true human nature but also that of the divine world. The wise person perceived true nature and true natural order and conformed to them. They believed in the exceptional man, a man with a mission to balance the harmony of the world.

The Japanese had adapted these Stoic ideals to their needs by emphasizing self mastery, temperance, courage and dedication. But they also learned the universal humanitarian ideas of manliness in the service of the state. This was enlarged and enriched into a new humanism and used it by applying it to solve social and business problems.

In Japan, business has been infused with humanism or has been made religion in practice. Religion is about deep spiritual devotions and that is the characteristic mark of Japanese business culture of deep concern for employees, respect for customers, ethical pricing, and understanding supplier's difficulties, empowering people, creating a culture of trust, quality and excellence all the time. A true Japanese worker views his contribution to the company as service to the larger purpose. And now that larger purpose – at least its harmony and reconnection with people -  has been threatened.

"A true Japanese worker views his contribution to the company as service to the larger purpose." You have crafted a brief and brilliant summary of why Japanese behave as they do. Thanks, Doc, for the education. ~mogama~
