When we look at Egypt today on our TV screens we see it triumphant it its victory and celebration over the fall of Hosni Mubarak. But if you are an ordinary independent person like me there is a great deal to be worried about.

Let us ponder to consider issues that are stalking the “Free Egypt” as it is now ruled by the Military High Council. Egypt is in the same condition the Roman Republic was in when it swung to dictatorship. Rome before it became a dictatorship it was practically ruled by army generals. Let us look at this briefly;

In the first century BC the Roman Republic was plunged into Civil War. Powerful Generals and their private armies fought for the control of the state until a General by the name of Julius Caesar emerged victorious. Julius Caesar was one of the outstanding Roman Generals who married politics to the army. He knew how to use and manipulate national hatreds to advance his political career. He became a dictator in the name of the people and in the process opened up an era of political murder that was going to last several centuries and that will fill history books with the most fascinating bloodshed.

The Military High Council of Egypt that is composed of Generals has always had massive authority and responsibility but it has a 30 year track record of complete incompetence to handle problems. The only strategy it knows best is by throwing soldiers at problems. So how is such a carcass going to run the state differently than it old ingrained Mubarak habit of just wanting the world to stand still? Indeed economic problems are beyond this council.

And now the youth, how are you going to deal with their energy that seems not to dissipate? One of the greatest factors that made the American Revolution so successful is that powerful Generals like George Washington who fought and won the battle with the British was that after the revolution was over they returned to their farms and continued with their daily mundane affairs. Perhaps we may be pushing it too far if we expect that the Egyptian youth possess such restrain virtue to leave everything and continue with their mundane affairs. It seems not possible for them to forget everything and allow the administration processes of the country to kick on without hindrances from their part.

We raise these predicaments and concerns in this series of Winning the Future and Capturing the Sputnik Moment. The tone set for the future by President Barack Obama in his 2011 State of the Union Address. A historic moment for Egypt indeed! Whither this beautiful, inspirational Arab African Nation? How best can we maximize the critical aspects of this revolution: The power and voice of ordinary people…the role of ordinary people to determine their destiny…the relations between civilians and the army…the national identity. The courage, determination and hope for change, winning the future and capturing the sputnik moment?
